South African Team is Getting Ready for the Ice Swimming World Cup in a 30-Degree Heat
For their trainings, athletes have to create conditions uncharacteristic of Africa, Sibnovosti.ru reports with the reference to the Vecherniy Murmansk newspaper.
The South African team is getting ready for the international ice swimming competitions in a 30-degree heat. Contestantsswim in the containers filled with iced water in the territory of a large fish processing factory. According to the President of the International Ice Swimming Association Ram Barkai,who talked to the Murmansk sport committee via videoconference, swimmers spend 10 minutes in freezing conditions,.
"Closer to the World Cup, we will run such trainings twice a week, so as to be prepared for Murmansk conditions. Now temperature in ourwater bodiesis about +11 degrees, but these bathtubs are about +1, just like Semenovskoye lake. Though the air temperature now is +30, we sprinkle each other’s heads with ice chips because during swimming competition,our heads will be under water", Ram Barkai reported.
To recap, the 3rd Ice Swimming World Cup and the Ice Swimming Arctic Cup will be held from March 15 to March 17 at Semenovsky lake in Murmansk. In previous years, an ice pool was constructed in the lake for the Championship. The pool was divided into swimming lanes. Spectator stands will be built on the lake shore for the audience.
