Carnival is held in capital of South Africa, where dragon dance is main part of parade

The event, accompanied by colourful costumes and vibrantly choreographed dances, attracted tens of thousands of locals and visitors

This year's carnival was held under the theme "Lekker", an Afrikaans word meaning "pleasant". Over one thousand artists from different communities in the city participated in the parade to celebrate diversity, creativity and cultural understanding.

The Chinese Cultural Parade was one of the highlights of the evening and it was the dragon dance that was the centrepiece of the parade. To celebrate the Year of the Dragon, the Chinese community made a special 43 metre Chinese dragon, which required up to 30 performers to move it around the street.

The event also featured Chinese folk dances, performances in traditional costumes.

Dong Gang, head of the Chinese performing group, said other local groups teamed up with the Chinese community to organise the performance.

"We have brought together a number of local groups and let them showcase Chinese culture with their own interpretation and in their own way," Dong said.

The Chinese community's performance was well received by the local audience. The dancing dragons, lions and pandas danced to great applause and cheers from the crowd gathered along the route. This is reported by CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.

The annual Cape Town Carnival, launched in 2010, aims to create a platform for people from different walks of life to come together, have fun and get to know each other better so that the city can not only foster social cohesion, but also create jobs and boost the economy.
